In it till the end, but we lose $22.52 per share

This time Ben Roethlisberger couldn't pull off the miracle finish. Had he been able to engineer a game-winning touchdown drive at the end of Super Bowl XLV, we would have celebrated a $3,000 win on one of our three-team parlays. Instead, we limp home with a loss that we hope was small enough for you to enjoy the game and the wagers. We want to note that we miscalculated the result at the Syndicate party. We erroneously recorded Proposition 8, Mike Wallace's longest receptioin, as a winner, but we were actually a yard short on that one.

Here's a recap of each bet so you know why we bet what we did and how it turned out.

Parlay 1: We were alive on this one until the very end as well. A Packers interception return for a touchdown on the Steelers last possession would have made this ticket a winner. We pushed on the interceptions, so we needed one more. An interception return would have given us more points scored in the second half than in the first half. This was only the second time in the last 13 Super Bowls that there have been more points scored in the first half than the second.

Parlay 2: As mentioned, a Steelers TD drive at the end without a sack would have made this ticket a winner.

Parlay 3: We lost this early, but had a shot at it. The first score of the game was a Packers TD pass. But it came on a third down play with the Packers in field goal range. If they don't convert on that play, they kick a field goal and this ticket is alive. But we pushed on interceptions anyways. A field goal was the first score in eight of the previous 12 games.

Proposition Parlay 1: Each team scored twice in a row, but neither could get the third score. The Steelers missed a 52-yard field goal in the third quarter that would have given them three straight scores. They also were in position to score a third straight time when they fumbled the ball away early in the fourth quarter at the Packers 33. A score on either of those possessions would have added $294 to our winnings. This is a bet that has been surprisingly one sided in favor of three straight scores. That had occurred in eight of the previous 12 Super Bowls.

Proposition Parlay 2: We hit both ends of this for a $228 ticket.

Proposition Parlay 3: Aaron Rodgers didn't have a rush until he took a knee at the end of the game. In seven of the previous 12 Super Bowls, there had been a one-yard touchdown. But not this time.

Proposition 1 and 2: We continue to be shut out in picking the first player to score a touchdown. We always take one player from each team knowing one of those will be a losing bet. But with odds, the payoffs are high. Packers receiver Jordy Nelson scored the first TD. His odds were 10 to 1.

Proposition 3: We bet tails because heads had come up the last four games. It was heads again.

Proposition 4: Roethlisberger covered this for us easily. He had 263 yards passing. We only need 239.5.

Proposition 5 and 9: We thought this was in good shape at halftime when James Starks had 37 yards rushing at the break. But he didn't get the rest until there was only five minutes left in the game. He finished with 52 and covered the wager where he had to be within 25.5 yards of Rashard Mendenhall who rushed for 68.

Proposition 6: Packers receiver Donald Driver had 28 yards receiving in the first half and needed only 18 more to win this bet. But he limped off the field toward the end of the first half. The next time we saw him, the TV camera showed him standing on the sideline after halftime and panned down to show him wearing a boot on an injured ankle. That came after the sideline reporter had said he was expected to return to action.

Proposition 7: The winning play on this didn't come until the fourth quarter when Rodgers hit Nelson for 38 yards.

Proposition 8: If you were at Syndicate Central we recorded this as a winning bet. We missed this by a yard. Mike Wallace caught a 25-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. We needed his longest reception to be over 25.5 yards. That yard cost us $420.

Proposition 10: In the previous 12 games, the longest touchdown had been 44.5 yards or longer 10 times. The longest TD in SBXLV was the 37-yard interception return by the Packers in the first quarter.

Proposition 11: Jordy Nelson is number 87. He scored the first TD to make this ticket a winner.

Proposition 12: There were no field goal attempts in the first quarter. But the Packers scored a TD on a third down play while in field goal range that would have made this a winner. This had been a successful bet in nine of the previous 12 games.

Proposition 13: The safety was a bet we made with our last $20. We actually hit this the last time the Steelers were in the Super Bowl against the Cardinals.

Proposition 14: Boston Celtics center Kevin Garnett made six free throws in his game earlier in the day, meaning Rodgers need to throw five touchdown passed to blow this bet for us. He threw three. Garnett made four of his free throws in the fourth quarter.

So there you have it. We are going to clear out all the accounts this year and start over next year. So we are going to need an address for everyone to be able to send checks. Please send your address and the name you want to appear on the check to our e-mail address jaygonzales@comcast.net. We'll send it out when we collect the tickets. If you're in Pigskin Mania, we can move your funds over to that account so you can apply it to next football season or other upcoming pools. Just let us know by e-mail. Players will collect $27.48 per share on the tickets we cash from this game, plus any leftover amounts in your accounts. Click here to go to the accounts page to see how much you have coming to you.

If you want to print a version of the results, click here. We also have scanned the actual tickets. Click here to see them.

Thanks for playing and we'll be in touch when the winning tickets have been collected and the checks are ready to go out.
