A smaller loss, but a loss
After it was all said and done, the Syndicate was left with $37.73 per
share, a loss of $12.27. The previously posted tally of
-$11.69 did not take into account the $50 in expenses that was deducted
from the amount wagered. But it was nothing close to the beating we took
in last year's game.
The whole evening was salvaged when Giants quarterback Eli Manning
drove his team to the game-winning score and made a winner out of Parlay
No. 6, the parlay that we always intentionally set up to have a chance
to win something in the fourth quarter if all else goes bad. Until that point, the Syndicate was in danger of being shut out
on parlays two years in a row for the first time in history.
Probably the biggest miscalculation among the wagers was the over/under
on sacks. Neither team had shown a propensity to give up many sacks,
particularly in the playoffs, which is why the Syndicate chose under 4.
That was a losing bet by the middle of the second quarter and the final
total was eight sacks.
With a total of 10 points scored through three quarters, it was
readily apparent that the three parlays with Total Points Over 54 were
also losers.
But the Syndicate did score well on the Proposition bets, winning seven
of 17, including $630 on the matchup between the quarterbacks for
passing attempts. We said Tom Brady would have 2.5 more pass
attempts than Manning. Brady had 48. Manning had 34.
We missed one of the proposition parlays by one yard when Brandon
Jacobs gained three on his first carry. If had picked up one more
yard we would have collected another $382. And we still haven't been
able to pick the first player to score a touchdown. The correct pick
this year was Laurence Maroney who was at 5 to 1 odds.
At Syndicate Central, the consensus was to leave the money on account
until next season. Players with shares can fill in the amount lost when
the next game rolls around and get back to full shares with a mere
$12.26 investment. But If you would rather have your money, we'll send
